Nigeria’s inflation rate has risen to 15.93% as of May 2026, marking the third consecutive month of increases. Food inflation has also risen sharply to 16.96% from 16.09% in April. The increase in inflation is connected to price hikes in numerous areas such as food, transportation, housing and energy.

Experts say various factors are behind Nigeria's inflation. The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) highlights disruptions in global energy markets, notably due to geopolitical concerns in the Middle East. These tensions have raised gasoline prices. This has driven up the cost of transportation and production, which has been passed on to consumers in turn.

Nigeria, alongside growing inflation, ranks lowest on the Quality of Life Index 2026, tied with countries such as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. This rating underscores the high cost of life and poor purchasing power faced by many Nigerians. “The current inflation is imposing extra strain on individuals and businesses,” said Godwin Oyedokun, a professor of accounting and finance at Lead City University.

Muda Yusuf, the CPPE boss, has appealed to authorities to do something about the economic issues. He emphasises the need to increase food security, logistics infrastructure, public transit, rail transportation and energy supply. "If these measures are put into place, they might help to reduce the impact of increasing expenses on consumers and boost greater economic stability.

These insights do not fully answer the many questions surrounding the government’s response to rising inflation. What exactly is the Nigerian government planning to do to fight inflation? What is the impact of the continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East on Nigeria’s economy? Finally, what are the likely repercussions of these inflation rates on the food security situation in Nigeria?

As Nigeria struggles with growing inflation and its effects on food security, the need for effective government policies is more pressing than ever. Addressing these economic difficulties is vital for enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians and guaranteeing food security in the face of global economic headwinds.
