Born on 28 August 1999 in Düsseldorf, Germany, Okoye is the son of an Igbo Nigerian father and a German mother. He developed through the youth systems of Fortuna Düsseldorf, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen before returning to Fortuna Düsseldorf in 2017.
Okoye made his senior debut for Fortuna Düsseldorf II in the Regionalliga West on 14 October 2017. He moved to Dutch club Sparta Rotterdam on a free transfer in July 2020 and was named the club’s Player of the Season after the 2020–21 campaign, during which he reportedly kept 10 clean sheets in 28 league matches.
Watford agreed to sign Okoye on 8 November 2021 on a five-and-a-half-year contract. He was initially loaned back to Sparta Rotterdam and reportedly made his Watford debut in an EFL Cup match against MK Dons on 23 August 2022.
